I have visited Lanhydrock a few times over the past few years as it’s one of those places that opens up new areas from time to time and it is located quite near to my Cornish base when I am down there.
it was also the opportunity to add one of my first stamps into the Pink Passport as well and as it happened, it was quite a soggy wet day and with it being quite a large house, it passed a good few hours in the dry.
One of the highlights of the house is the Long Gallery, as it features a 17th Century Jacobean plasterwork ceiling which features over 24 panels depicting scenes from the book of Genesis.
During one of my visits, the ceiling was undergoing restoration for the first time in it’s history, which required each panel to be cleaned by hand, normally you would expect this part of the house to be closed whilst the work was ongoing, but the National Trust allowed people to wander around the scaffolding and see the images up close, which was certainly a once in a lifetime opportunity, as this was the first time this had happened in 400 years!
Some of the plasterwork images are featured in the second gallery on this post, along with a picture to show just how dull the ceiling used to be.
I have not been back since the restoration was completed, so I may try to pop in again this year.
