I have been thinking about doing this for some time, but after putting it off for far too long, the time is nigh, time to read every Stephen King book, in order of date of publication, a chance to see how his writing style has developed over the years.
The first book in the list was Carrie, which was first published in April 1974, a number of years before I was even born!
The synopsis of the book is as follows:-
High school can be tough for many teenagers, but for Carrie White , it’s especially hellish. A shy and awkward teen being raised by a religious zealot , Carrie is frequently the target of bullies. But Carrie has a secret talent: She can make things move with her mind. One fateful night, an especially cruel prank at her senior prom pushes her over the edge, and Carrie unleashes her telekinetic powers on all who get in her way.
I was not sure if I had already read this book in the past, but on reflection, I don’t think I had, so it was something new to start out with.
Even though this is Stephen’s first ever book, it was still very well written, the characters were very life like which allowed myself to be able to ‘interact’ with them really well throughout the course of the book.
The book was somewhat split throughout, covering both what was happening with Carrie, alongside her peers, interlaced with snippets from the ‘official report’ into the event.
For some, this could have been a little confusing, jumping from one time period to another, but for me personally, I felt it gave a great ongoing update to the story and how people’s lives were affected in the aftermath.
