On the trail of the Pendle Witches, Halloween 2026

Alice Nutter Statue #1

This year Halloween fell on a Saturday and as the weather was rather nice, I decided to wander around some of the sites related to the Pendle Witches as it’s a place relatively near to where I live.

I started out at the Pendle Heritage Museum, it’s only a small place, but ran by very friendly people and is full of interesting information about not only the Witches, but also about the surrounding area in general.

After the museum, I headed over to see the statue of Alice Nutter, the most famous of the Pendle Witches, as it was Halloween, there was a steady queue of people waiting to take selfies with the statue (and also a supposed paranormal Investigator, I am not sure what she was hoping to pick up here, but her chain smoking of cigarettes in the queue was not appreciated by those still alive!)

With it being late autumn now as well, the Sun was rather low in the sky and directly behind the statue, which made photo taking quite a challenge, but I just about managed to get the sun behind her head for a reasonable couple of shots.

Finally I went over to Newchurch-in-Pendle to visit St Mary’s Church which is said by some to be the final resting place of Alice Nutter (although this is also strongly debated as it was unheard of for a convicted Witch to be buried in Consecrated ground).

Final stop in the village was to the Witchy-related shop. I purchased a postcard from the shop and was told a rather interesting fact about the hill, that you can see the shape of a witch when looking at the hill from a certain angle (the postcard I chose was a winter one and yes, what looks like a witch can be seen, however I am putting this down to a strong case of Pareidolia, but still a good tail none-the-less.
